Islamic Guide to Nikah
Understanding the sanctity of marriage in Islam and how to find your life partner the halal way.
"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates" — Ar-Rum: 21
01
The Importance of Nikah in Islam
Nikah (marriage) is one of the most sacred institutions in Islam. It is not merely a social contract but a deeply spiritual bond ordained by Allah (SWT). The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized marriage as completing half of one's deen.
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا
"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them."
Surah Ar-Rum — 30:21
"When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of his religion, so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half."
— Sahih al-Bayhaqi
02
Conditions of a Valid Nikah
According to Islamic law (Shariah), a valid Nikah requires the following essential conditions to be met:
- Offer (Ijab) and acceptance (Qabul) — both parties must clearly agree
- Presence of a Wali (guardian) for the bride
- At least two adult Muslim witnesses must be present
- Mahr (dowry) must be agreed upon and given to the bride
- Both parties must be eligible to marry under Islamic law
- The marriage must be announced publicly — it must not be secret
💡 Note: A Nikah performed without a Wali or witnesses is not considered valid in the majority of Islamic schools of thought.

The Islamic Process of Finding a Spouse
Islam provides a beautiful and dignified process for seeking a life partner. The process prioritizes character, faith, and family involvement over superficial factors.
1
Make Dua
Begin with sincere supplication to Allah. Ask Him to guide you to the best partner for your deen and dunya.
2
Involve Family
Inform your parents or Wali of your intention to marry. Their involvement is essential in the Islamic process.
3
Seek Compatibility
Look for compatibility in deen, values, and character. The Prophet (ﷺ) advised prioritizing religiousness.
4
Istikhara
Perform Salat ul-Istikhara when you have a potential match to seek Allah's guidance in your decision.
04
Criteria for Choosing a Spouse
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) gave clear guidance on what to look for when choosing a spouse:
"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. So you should marry the religious woman, otherwise you will be a loser."
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
While this hadith mentions women, the same principle applies to both men and women. The most important criteria according to Islam are:
- Deen (religiousness) — the most important quality in a spouse
- Good character (Akhlaq) — honesty, kindness, and patience
- Family background and upbringing
- Compatibility in values, goals, and lifestyle
- Physical attraction — permissible to consider within Islamic bounds
- Financial stability and responsibility (especially for men)
05
Rules of Interaction Before Nikah
Islam sets clear boundaries for interaction between prospective spouses before marriage. These boundaries protect both parties and ensure the process remains dignified and halal.
- A man may see the face and hands of a prospective wife — with permission
- All meetings must take place in the presence of a Mahram (male guardian)
- Private meetings, phone calls, and chats without a Mahram are not permissible
- Both parties may ask questions about character, lifestyle, and expectations
- There should be no physical contact before the Nikah is performed
- The interaction should be purposeful and aimed at making a decision
💡 On Nikah Time, we enforce these boundaries through our family monitoring feature, ensuring all communication remains halal and transparent.
06
Understanding Mahr (Dowry)
Mahr is an obligatory gift from the groom to the bride. It is her exclusive right and remains her property forever. It is a symbol of love, respect, and commitment.
- Mahr can be money, gold, property, or any agreed-upon item of value
- It must be agreed upon before or at the time of Nikah
- There is no fixed minimum or maximum amount in Islam
- It is recommended to keep Mahr simple and within the groom's means
- The bride has the right to waive part or all of her Mahr if she wishes
"The best of marriage is that which is made easiest."
— Sahih Ibn Hibban
07
Salat ul-Istikhara — Seeking Allah's Guidance
Before making any major decision, including marriage, Muslims are encouraged to perform Salat ul-Istikhara. This is a two-rakat prayer asking Allah for guidance and blessing in the matter.
- Perform two rakats of voluntary prayer with the intention of Istikhara
- After the prayer, recite the Dua of Istikhara sincerely
- There is no specific sign to look for — trust Allah's plan after making your decision
- You may repeat Istikhara multiple times if you remain unsure
- Istikhara should be combined with practical research and consultation
وَعَسَىٰ أَن تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ
"And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you."
Surah Al-Baqarah — 2:216
08
Rights & Responsibilities After Nikah
Islam beautifully outlines the mutual rights and responsibilities of husband and wife. A successful Islamic marriage is built on mercy, love, and shared responsibility.
- The husband is responsible for financial provision (Nafaqah) for his family
- The wife has the right to kind treatment, respect, and emotional support
- Both spouses must be faithful, honest, and loyal to each other
- Major decisions should be made through mutual consultation (Shura)
- Both have equal rights to love, companionship, and physical intimacy
- Children must be raised with Islamic values and education
"The best of you are those who are best to their wives."
— Sunan al-Tirmidhi
